RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
