Previous FBI director James Comey has denied the charges to making false statements to congressional representatives and hindering a lawmaking procedure.

The former director's legal representative filed the response representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

His attorney announced he would seek to have the proceedings terminated for multiple causes including that his client, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

The former director was formally accused just days after the former president pushed his chief prosecutor to take action against him.

Legal Proceedings

In court on Wednesday, the defense counsel Mr Fitzgerald informed the court they planned to present several petitions to terminate the proceedings before a trial, claiming the prosecution was spiteful and that a government lawyer was unlawfully appointed to handle the case.

The former director's proceedings was first handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under pressure from the former president after his probe into a different political adversary - the New York official - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Courtroom Atmosphere

Mr Comey came across in positive mood as he came into the courtroom on mid-week, chatting with his attorneys and making jokes. He was joined by his spouse, Mrs Failor and child Maureen, a government attorney who the former government terminated.

Following the reading to the court state his legal protections and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on mid-week, Mr Comey was asked if he understood the allegations.

"I do your honour. Thank you very much," he informed the proceedings.

Previous Events

The former director was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about several months into the former president's first administration as president. At the period, he was directing an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between Moscow and the presidential campaign.

While in office, the director sparked a backlash from the Democratic party when he announced just shortly prior to the national vote that he was probing political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against Hillary Clinton were not pursued, leading to criticism from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

The federal government claim Mr Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They say he provided false information to the upper house by claiming he had not authorized an individual at the FBI to release to media organizations information about the FBI investigations.

Prosecutors also allege Mr Comey of "improperly attempting to affect, obstruct and impede" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Public Statements

Via social media James Comey published to his social media after he was indicted, he stated he was not guilty and accused Trump of behaving like a "autocrat".

"Our household have known for a long time that there are costs to challenging Donald Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our knees."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a court case."

The accusations against the former director surfaced after the former president posted on digital channels calling for his attorney general, the attorney general, charge James Comey and additional individuals.
